‘Will Hurt My Daughter…’: Kolkata Rape Victim’s Father Turns Down Compensation, Demands Speedy Justice

CBI officers on Thursday visited the residence of the doctor and spoke to her parents as a part of their investigation.

The father of the victim trainee doctor who was brutally raped while on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has refused to accept the compensation offered over the incident saying that it will hurt her daughter and demanded for justice.

While speaking to the media, the father of the victim, a second-year PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, expressed gratitude towards the entire nation’s medical fraternity and those protesting against the gruesome incident.

“I express gratitude to everyone, regarding the protest that has been happening across the country and world. I consider everyone who is standing with us, as my sons and daughters. I have turned down the compensation. It will hurt my daughter if I accept money as compensation for her death. I want justice,” news agency ANI quoted the doctor’s father as saying.

While he did not reveal the details about his questioning with the CBI probe team, he said that the CBI has recorded the family’s statement and taken it in writing. He further said that the CBI has assured the family of arresting the accused at the earliest and awarding strictest punishment.

“It is not lawfully appropriate to give details on our conversation with the CBI. I can’t give you details on the questioning that has been done in connection with this case. They have recorded our statement and taken it in writing CBI has assured us that the accused will be arrested at the earliest and awarded strict punishment based on whatever we have told them,” he added.

CBI officers on Thursday visited the residence of the doctor and spoke to her parents as a part of their investigation, news agency PTI reported citing an official. The investigators took note of the time they received the call from the hospital, informing them about the death of their daughter, he said.

The officers also asked them about their daughter’s friends, and whether she complained of any problems at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where she was a postgraduate trainee doctor, he added.

“It was difficult to speak to a couple who have lost their daughter in such a manner,” the officer said.

The CBI also interrogated five doctors of the hospital, its former medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal (MSVP), principal and the head of the Chest Department where the victim’s body was found, he said.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case from the Kolkata Police on the direction of the high court.

Earlier, the doctor’s father shared his daughter’s last diary entry. He said that the victim was studious, and her last diary entry revealed what she aspired to do in her life.

According to India Today, citing her father, the 31-year-old victim wanted to top her MD course and achieve a gold medal in it. The victim’s father described his daughter as a hard-working student, telling the news outlet that she fought a lot to achieve her goal of becoming a doctor and that the family made several sacrifices to raise her”.

The horrific incident has shaken the country with nationwide protests going on demanding the prompt action in the investigation. Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday declared nationwide withdrawal of non-essential services by doctors from 6 am on Saturday, August 17 to 6 am on Sunday, August 18, for 24 hours.

Amid the ongoing protests, some miscreants entered the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during early hours of Thursday and vandalised portions of the medical facility, where the body of the victim was found.

The Kolkata Police, meanwhile, arrested 19 people and detained three for the vandalism incident.
